Real Wedding: Katie and Scott’s Simple Vintage Wedding

Katie and Scott had a truly DIY, one of a kind wedding. With a mustard, grey ,and mint color story, every decor detail of the wedding was thrifted or made by the bride and her friends and family. Katie looked so ethereal and from another time in her Elizabeth Dye Honeychurch gown. She knew the dress had to have a vintage vibe, and of course Elizabeth Dye delivered the perfect design for her big day.

Tell us about THE dress and what inspired your look.

THE dress, my Elizabeth Dye Honeychurch dress was the first dress I saw on the Elizabeth Dye blog and I fell in love. I requested to try it on when I went in for my first appointment. It was the first of 7 dresses I tried on. I came back two hours later and said yes. The delicate lace sleeves are my favorite part. Growing up I loved the series “Anne of Green Gables” and I love anything with lace and sleeves. When I saw the dress online with a redheaded model wearing it, I was instantly in love. It was the perfect combination of vintage meets danceable.

What were the most important details to pulling off your dream wedding?

I was very simple with flowers, my bridesmaids had their own choice of dresses and shoes, hairstyle etc, groomsmen didn’t wear matching suits. I wanted the wedding to be “us” as much as possible, and that meant simple vintage. All the centerpieces and other design items were either found on Etsy or flea markets or borrowed from family. Our favors were simple bags with coffee beans in them (Scott and I both work at Starbucks so we pulled together our free pounds of coffee we get every week and used those). The area we spent the most time, energy and money on was the music. We wanted a really, really good DJ. Scott and I are huge music lovers. We wanted to design every song for the wedding. We were so meticulous about what song played when….it was probably really annoying for our DJ! Even the pre ceremony music, was in order down to even some theme music from “Lost” and “Out of Africa” that was specifically chosen.

What was the most memorable moment?

I have TWO. One, when Scott said his vows. He had been writing me love letters since we met. He managed to include quotes from some of my favorite movies and songs. One being from “Love, Actually.” He said, “and during weddings you tell the truth, to me, you are perfect.” You could hear our guests laugh and sigh. Who doesn’t recognize that quote?? Two, being when Scott and I were waiting to be introduced as husband and wife, were trying to figure out what song we told the DJ we wanted to be introduced to. We had picked Hall and Oats “Making My Dreams Come True” for the bridal party, but for the life of us couldn’t remember, then it began, “If You Leave” by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. The end song from “Pretty In Pink”. The look on our faces was awesome. It was the perfect song to be introduced to. Brocoff Photography got a great shot of us, looking at one another like, “yeah, we are pretty awesome at picking out music!”

If you could give future brides any advice, what would it be?

Making sure you stay on top your planning and scheduling. Since I did most of the planning and organizing myself, it was crucial to make sure that I had set dates, times and an itinerary for everything. I love lists, and I am lucky to have had a wonderful bridal party, and very patient and understanding fiancé and parents. Make a list and then take advantage of people offering, “can I help?” LET THEM. Along with my excellent bridesmaid Dani, we did all the bouquets and centerpieces in my hotel room the morning of! AND they turned out lovely. Also, just take ten minutes with your new hubbie and enjoy the wedding alone together. Just look around and soak it all up, it truly is a once in a life time moment.

Memorial Day Weekend Essentials

We hope you’re having a fabulous long weekend, Lovelies! With Memorial Day here we can’t help but feel  that the summer season is officially upon us. Today we are bringing you a few of our must have items for summer. Inspired by backyard picnics, trips to the beach, and dates with our hubby’s, you’re sure to want to add all of these pieces to your arsenal.

1. Backyard Picnics are one of our favorite date night go to’s, and this spread is not too shabby!

2. A new pair of sunnies is sure to get you beach ready, and we love TOMS for their One for One initiative, giving sight to a person in need for every pair purchased.

3. Orange is one of our favorite summer hues. In our makeup bag right now is Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Audacious.

4. When we saw this dress at Madewell, we knew it was our Must Have Piece for summer.

5. Josie Maran’s Bohemian Waves Argan Hair Mist adds the perfect balance of texture and moisture to your hair. Most salty sprays make hair dry and and straw-like, but with argan oil as its key ingredient this mist adds volume while keeping hair soft.

6. Benefit’s Hoola bronzer is the perfect matte bronzer to add a glow to your daily routine. It’s perfect for contouring.

7. Bring on the color! Essie’s ‘Too Taboo’ is the perfect fuschia for your mani/pedi.

8. Neutral sandals are on trend this summer. Stick to beiges or bright white.

9. Nothing made our weekend brighter than the launch of Oh Joy! for Target’s summer collection.

10. Bike rides are another thing we look forward to in the summer months. We have our eye on this bike.

Real Wedding: Lauren and Brian

No one can top what a bride has to say about her dream dress and her wedding day, so we thought we’d start this post off with the wonderful story behind Lauren and Brian’s big day!

“I love my Briana story. I was having trouble finding a dress that spoke to me. Then I came upon Briana while scrolling though That was it, I was smitten. But where would I find her? There were no Sarah Janks stockists in New York City in December of 2012. Then I saw that a Sarah trunk show was coming to Lovely Bride NYC in March of 2013, just enough time to get the dress ordered for our August 17th wedding! Lovely already had a special significance to us. My future fiancée lived directly across the street from the boutique when we met. I would stare out the window wondering that I was missing out on inside that beautiful brownstone building (this was before the store moved to TriBeCa), and knew it was the only place where I could find MY dress, and in the nick of time! A perfect coincidence. I made my appointment. When the day came the sales assistant asked, “What kind of style are you looking for?” and I blurted out, “I’ve been waiting months to get my hands on Briana!” She was a little taken aback by my enthusiasm, and I learned that I was the first person to come in and request the dress by name. Everything went according to plan, and Briana looked beautiful next to my husband’s three-piece gray suit at our perfect Long Island vineyard wedding. She will be worn again at a reception in Scotland this July, when we go to celebrate our marriage with his extended family who could not make the wedding. Can’t wait to wear her again!”

Tell us about THE dress and what inspired your look.

I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted, but I knew what I didn’t want. I didn’t want white. I didn’t want strapless. I didn’t want poof. I wanted something that would be light and flowy for the summer. It wasn’t until I stumbled on Brianna that I KNEW what I wanted.

What were the most important details to pulling off your dream wedding?

Wow, that’s a hard one to answer. Putting together a wedding by yourself is not easy, so staying disciplined and organized was key to getting everything done. Especially since it was a destination wedding that required finding venues and coordinating the logistics for 3 days of festivities.

Not only were we blessed with the beautiful landscape of Bedell Cellars, but we also found the PERFECT house to stay in and get ready in, AND were able to rent the house next door so that the guys could get ready separate from the girls. We were blessed with an amazing caterer who also coordinated our party rentals for us. Our florist did a beautiful job. But I think the most important thing to us was the music. We had a great cocktail hour band that learned some songs that we requested, and our DJ was patient enough with me to let me micromanage the playlist beforehand.  The only drawback was that I danced so much, I hardly ate any of the wonderful food! We didn’t even make it to the dessert table!

Also, as you can see from my credits, Etsy was key to the wedding. I could find basically anything I wanted, and if I couldn’t find it, I’d have it custom designed.

What was the most memorable moment?

Dancing to ‘Unchained Melody’ with both my husband and my father.

If you could give future brides any advice, what would it be?

Something will probably go wrong on your wedding day, and that’s ok. Don’t let it get to you. You’ve spent months, maybe years, carefully planning. Trust that you’ve done the best you can, and don’t let little things that might not go the way you planned detract from your day. And wear shapewear! Wearing nothing but undies was my biggest regret.

Featured Vendor: Aunt Ellie’s Sweet Treats Presents Campfire Crispies

Are you looking for a unique, yet equally yummy alternative to the wedding cake? Look no further! Ellie of Campfire Crispsies has brought a whole new desert venture to the wedding scene! Her homemade Campfire Crispies are an updated version of the classic American dessert, the rice krispy treat. After catering one of our Lovely events, we knew we had to share her genius with you.

From Aunt Ellie:

The marshmallow has always been my favorite sweet thing because it means much more than just dessert.  The memories of roasting marshmallows on sticks at my Nana’s cottage by the lake, and in my childhood home in St. Louis during winter…. made those little guys a part of my sugary makeup, and I choose to celebrate them!  I started experimenting with rice crispy treats 8 years ago.  I despise reading recipes, so I just made them my own way, and they ended up being better than the original (in my humble opinion).  Either way, they taste like home.  That nostalgia is something that I always aim to capture.

When my twin sister, Leah, had her first child, I got the idea for turning baking into a business to reinvent the “culinary aunt”, and to represent all the cool, young aunts in the world as I spread my sugary cheer to one and all.  Leah now has two adorable boys, which inspires me to make this business the best it can be!

I am in the early stages of Aunt Ellie’s Sweet Treats, and am looking to hire a full team of bakers to accommodate all my clients; but as of now, it’s a one woman show, so a couple of weeks notice is much appreciated for big events.
My Treats are ideal for events because they are out-of-the-ordinary delights that no one will be expecting.  They pair particularly well with vintage-themed weddings.  If you order the smaller sized Treats they can be passed on trays, and the larger ones are perfect for your dessert bar, or as swell take home gifts.  During meetings with my clients, I typically bring a couple of flavors to try, and discuss custom orders if they so desire.   I have been dying to make a full-out layered Campfire Crispie wedding cake for someone!  Who’s in??

Aunt Ellie
