17 Songs We’d Like In Our Weddings

I think like 75% of us our guilty of googling “Indie Wedding Songs” at one point in our life. Am I right? It’s hard–you know–picking a song you either have to walk down the aisle to, or have your first dance to. Especially if your taste in music goes beyond top 40 hits! So, in order to help some of you out (because every time I’ve googled, I’ve only found mediocre lists) we’ve compiled a list of some awesome songs we think would work really well given the right couples! Some of the songs have varied meanings, however I think it should be more about how the song makes you feel. Enjoy!

Wedding Procession:

1. Zebra by Beach House -The minute I hear this song, I think of a wedding procession at a beautiful outdoor wedding. Zebra’s lovely opening of simple notes and humming in the background is powerful yet calm enough for a wedding.

2. Lover’s Spit by Broken Social Scene – This song is really cool. Picture the wedding party walking down the aisle really slowly.

3. Opus 23 by Dustin O’Halloran – For those thinking of having someone play piano during your procession, this piece is wonderful.

4. North by Phoenix

5. The Melody of a Fallen Tree by Windsor For The Derby

6. Vito’s Ordination Song by Sufjan Stevens– I understand this song can sound really depressing at times, however, it’s a very positive song and when coupled with a positive day, I think it would sound great.

Wedding Recession:

1. Don’t Worry Baby by The Beach Boys – I know, this is so cliché. But c’mon–who doesn’t think of hearts, shooting stars, and love when they hear this song?!

2. For Emma by Bon Iver – Bon Iver is awesome. Bonus points if you/your brides name is Emma.

3. Love Like A Sunset Part 2 by Phoenix

4. Ceremony by New Order

5. Carries On by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Series – It was hard not to put “Home” however, I wanted to make sure the list was original!

6. Yellow by Coldplay – This has most likely been done thousands of times but this song is so pretty and has amazing lyrics.

First Dance:

1. Canela by Devandra Banhart

2. Harvest Moon by Neil Young – In my opinion, one of the best songs every written. Plus, its so warm.

3. Northern Sky by Nick Drake

4. Playground Love by Phoenix versionI chose the Phoenix version rather then the original Air version because this one has more of a romantic feel to it.

5. True Love Waits by Radiohead– The difficulty with this song is that there has never been a studio version of the song. So you’ll have to do with either the live recording or perhaps have a friend play it for you? Regardless, it’s a beautiful song by one of the best bands out there.

So, what do you think of our list? Are there any songs you think should have been included? What songs did you walk and dance to?

I vote for Ten Story Love Song by The Stone Roses. Love it!

Just listened to it! It’s really cool. Had I known it, I probably would have added it!

I walked in with Harvest Moon which was played live by Spencer Burton (from Attack in Black)
First dance was Offering by The Avett Brothers.
Both songs couldn’t have been more perfect.

I just got married in Central Park (an elopement) and our first dance was Harvest Moon by Neil Young, one of our favorite songs of all time. It seemed everyone, including random row boaters, were happy about our song selection as well. We put together a mini playlist for ourselves since we had no guests: http://curiouscranes.wordpress.com/2011/09/25/wedding-playlist/

For our procession, we used Sigur Ros’ untitled Track 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cZGgtN42ns). For our recession, we used “Us” by Regina Spektor. :)

Oooh! ALMOST included a Sigur Ro’s track but opted for For Emma by Bon Iver instead. It was hard though.

I walked down the aisle to the Hawaiian version of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow.’ We had ‘First Day of My Life’ by Bright Eyes during the ceremony. We left to the ‘All I Want is You’ song from Juno. And our first dance was ‘Lovely Tonight’ by Joshua Radin.

In my eyes, the most perfect wedding songs ever… but I could be biased…

My first dance song was “Be Mine” by R.E.M. – it’s so sweet and has such great imagery.

It seems like Harvest Moon is quite popular! All great choices, though. Seriously!

Hey Elizabeth,

I hope that you don’t think that my lists are mediocre!

Nice list though. I use some of these for my sets but you definitely have some great add ons.

Its Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic ZEROS not “Series”

20 Alexandra | 01.29.14 at 6:27 pm |

We are using “Hey Ho” by the Lumineers for the bridal party procession, “Joga” by Bjork for the bridal procession and Lou Reeds version of “This Magic Moment” for the recession. Our first dance will be “Little Trip to Heaven” by Tom Waits :)

Ashton Lane’s (Primrose Hill) is an wedding song with an out door cinematic feel of true romance, set near Abby Road, and the most beautiful place on earth, the Human Heart.
